| Oh. I am very excited about my Spring semester schedule. Nothing looked fun and I was quite depressed, until I found an inter-departmental course on modern aesthetics and decided to take composition lessons. Very exciting.
The summer was great, since I haven't updated all season. I managed two groups at Interlochen: one orchestra and one band. It was a lot of work, and I didn't get a single day off in all six weeks, but it was great. Being close to Marshall was great as well, although I suspect I'm becoming spoiled. The man treats me real nice, what can I say?
Anyway, I was mainly just writing to be excited about my spring schedule. Yay!

| I've played my flute once since the commencements, and I don't miss it. I should really pick it up again since I have to play a thing that I'm getting paid for, and after I haven't played for a while, I usually feel sort of out of control where my fingers are concerned. And usually my embochure feels lazy... like running after I haven't in a long time... just not as precisely accurate as it is otherwise.
Aside from that, I'm ready to move into the next segment of my life. And by that, I mean my musicology degree. Dr. Hess just forwarded a call for papers from the AMS to Mike and I today... I have a month to enlarge a paper that I, presumably, have already started. I'll have to figure out which paper I want to use and how I'm going to enlarge it. God, I love research. And I love musicology. Yay.
That's all from me for the moment.

| Hi all. I'm going to write now.
The end of my semester was rocky, but made more smooth by the presence and help of one Marshall, who is very cute. In all seriousness, I had both finals and papers to grade, and my own counterpoint and opera history finals to study for, not to mention my recital, jury, usual random paperwork for Interlochen, and packing and cleaning so I could get back to Missouri with clothes to wear. Somehow it all worked out, I did not have a heart attack while playing my recital, and I seem to have done well enough on my finals. None of my students have sent me threatening emails/letters... then again, I AM having my mail forwarded to Interlochen... so if they had sent letters, I wouldn't know.
Being home was quite a relief for a few days. I slept so much the first couple of days that I was afraid I had mono (again... I don't think you can get it twice, though). When I woke up, I realized that I had a cold. Said cold has been my constant companion for about two weeks. It's probably my body's response to so much stress/change in climate/the always-germy house.
So then I started to work on my presentation for Canada. I found a lot of interesting things; I wish I had had time to survey more than 25 schools for my data, but I think I got a pretty good sample, especially as far as size and geography are concerned. I also got some interesting results, like the percentage of female wind ensemble directors: 6.7%. Better yet, female trumpet teachers: a little over 2%. It'll give us something interesting to talk about. I'm a little nervous, as this is my first academic conference, but I'm sure I'll learn a lot.
I took the GRE this morning. That was a little bit of a mind-blow. I did well enough, though... my mom informed me that I was safely inside the median scores for Harvard attendees. Pretty good for approximately one hour of studying (IE: desperately trying to remember mathematical formulas). I recommend Kaplan's test-prep book for anyone who has to take that monstrosity. I mean, test.
Going back to E. L. tomorrow morning, and then to Canada the following day. Then will chill for approximately a week and a half, play some flute, and head up to Interlochen (YAY! Being in one place for more than two weeks!). Have to say, I'm pretty excited about my job this year... well, excited and trepidatious... | | |

Playing piccolo in Drumming tonight was one of THE coolest musical experiences I've had. Ever. I realize that that makes me a geek and a nerd and boring and so forth, but there's something about minimalism that allows me to see the "forest" through the notes. I can't seem to do that with other music anymore. And I get to do it again tomorrow.
And the people doing it are the guys in the recording above. So. Cool.

| On a second reading of the paper I turned in last year, I have realized two very important things:
1) Never, never use the word "unique" in a paper without qualifying, HEAVILY, why the thing is unique. Never. This is one of Dr. Hess's pet peeves, and after re-reading my own work, I TOTALLY agree.
2) I pretty much suck. I think I might scrap the paper, keep the ideas, and start over!
